With siding, the calculus reverses. Because the cladding around the window can be removed and reinstalled cheaply, the best-practice method is full-frame replacement with a nailing-fin window: strip back the siding around the opening, remove the old window down to the rough framing, inspect and repair the studs and sill, then install the new unit by screwing its fin to the sheathing over properly lapped flashing membranes.
